review | Essential Eating at the 2011 SF Food Truck Festival

The 3rd Annual SF Street Food Festival is this weekend. If you haven’t already read up on Lucia’s Plan of Attack, I highly suggest you do. My friends and I were able to make it out to the inaugural SF Street Food Festival in 2009 and definitely used the divide and conquer technique, as outlined by Lucia, to our great advantage.

I’ve taken up another piece of Lucia’s advice by combing through the list of vendors to see what they will have to offer this weekend. Below are just a few that have piqued my interest.

Bi-Rite: With an entire day devoted to food, who cares about which order to consume it all in. I’ve had the Salted Caramel Ice Cream before at their proper brick and mortar location in the Mission, but it’s the Strawberry Mint Popsicle that sounds especially delicious.

Kung-Fu Tacos: I tried the Nun Chuk Chicken taco for the first time at a recent Off the Grid event in the Upper Haight, and lucky for you this weekend, Kung Fu Tacos will have it on the menu as well. If a small Nun Chuk Chicken taco is too small to curb your appetite, try the Nun Chuk Chicken Burrito.

4505 Meats: I’m also a sucker for cheeseburgers, and 4505 Meats’ cheeseburger was voted “Best Burger in the Bay Area” earlier this year. Well then, I guess I’d have to see this burger in action for myself.

Southern Sandwich Company: Texas Chopped Beef Brisket Sandwich. For my fellow meat lovers, do I really need to say any more? I mean, really?

LIBA Falafel: French fries are probably the easiest form of food to share amongst friends in a big group setting such as this. Hand-cut sweet potato fries just sound too good to pass up.

Hapa SF: “Hapa” is slang for someone of mixed racial heritage with Asian and/or Pacific Islander roots. The menu includes modern Filipino-American dishes, and as a full-blooded Filipino-American, I have my eyes and my stomach locked on their Lumpia Shanghai.

Sabores del Sur: If I’m a sucker for a cheeseburger and stand in admiration of a good lumpia, I’ll swoon over a tasty empanada. Hitting up Sabores for one of these little delights is a definite must, as well.
