2015 Grammys Recap

BY BRUNA COSTA

Last night, the world’s most famous music stars were united inside Los Angeles’ Staples Center for the 57th edition of the Grammy Awards. As the fight for the trophies transpired, viewers also had the chance to watch the show’s long-awaited performances, which included unusual duets and solo shows. This year’s long list of performers included Beyoncé, Katy Perry, AC/DC, Pharrell Williams, Sam Smith, and many more. It was quite a night.

To summarize what everyone’s talking about today, we’ve highlighted some moments from the show that definitely caught the world’s attention.

Sam Smith was the winner of night.

Smith had the night of his life. The British romantic singer, who was nominated in six categories, won four awards: “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” for his song “Stay With Me”, in addition to “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Best New Artist.”

A funny moment came during his speech for the “Record of the Year” award, as Smith thanked his ex-boyfriend by saying, “Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys.” There’s some nice proof that bad experiences can often lead to good ones in the future. Congrats, Sam!

Kanye West acting like Kanye West.

We all remember when Kanye ruined Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs, saying, “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish — but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all-time”. Well, it seems as though they’ve both gotten over it and are now able to share some laughs about the whole thing.

Besides being photographed with Taylor, Kanye also performed a near makeover of the incident, popping up onstage in the beginning of Beck’s acceptance speech for “Album of the Year,” an award which Beyoncé was in the running for as well. He left Beyoncé and Jay Z horrified in the crowd, but ended up not saying anything at all. Still, it was definitely the most awkward moment of the night. Thanks, Kanye!

The surprise of the Grammys: Beck.

Speaking of Beck, he was definitely the night’s biggest surprise, winning “Album of the Year” for his album Morning Phase. Nobody was expecting that, not even Beck, who didn’t know what to say in his acceptance speech (partly because he was surprised and partly because of Kanye’s joke).

Pharrell Williams and Taylor Swift.

Although most of the night’s performances were kind of depressing, we can say that Taylor was really having fun and enjoying the moment. Meanwhile, Pharrell’s face seemed like he didn’t buy the excitement at all. His disapproval face has gone viral and is now blowing up the internet. C’mon, Pharrell, let the girl enjoy the party!

Katy Perry’s performance.

All the performances were awesome, but we decided to highlight this one for an important reason. After making like her birthday last week at the Super Bowl, Perry chose her introspective song “By the Grace of God” for her Grammy performance, following a moving segment about domestic abuse from Brooke Axtell. Besides putting on an awesome and emotional show, Perry also helped turn attention to this serious issue. Thumbs up to her!
