POPPED! Music Festival and Philadelphia

Be sure to check out this week’s POPPED! Music Festival in Philadelphia. Taking place on Friday September 23rd and Saturday the 24th in FDR Park, this festival will surely cure your depression over the end of the summer festival season. POPPED! will feature an extensive lineup of big time performers such as The Shins, Pretty Lights and Girl Talk. The festival has made a comeback this year to the excitement of Philadelphians and out-of-towners alike, and FDR Park is the perfect place for it. Located in South Philadelphia, this green oasis nestled within the city is comprised of grassy fields and lakes. There’s no better way to enjoy Philadelphia in the fall than listening to some awesome music in FDR Park.

While POPPED! will no doubt provide plenty of entertainment, the City of Brotherly Love has much more to offer. Whether you’re a history buff, a sports fan, an artist, or just looking for some fun, you’ll be able to find something good. Here are some suggestions after the jump.

Penn’s Landing (River Stage): This waterfront area overlooking the Delaware River is bustling with activity throughout the year. Covering about ten blocks, it’s a great place to walk around and enjoy the views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the city lights at night. If you have Friday evening free and are looking to enjoy even more music, Deadmau5 will be putting on a show at the Festival Pier (tickets available here).

Independence National Historical Park: U.S. history enthusiasts will find nothing better than this national park located in the historic district of Center City, aptly nicknamed “America’s most historic square mile.” At the center of the park is Independence Hall and right across is the Liberty Bell Center. If this isn’t enough history for you, the park also contains the former site of the President’s House as well as many other sights.

Philadelphia Museum of Art
: The third-largest art museum in the country sits at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway with a view of the city skyline, and the exhibits featuring Renaissance, American, Impressionist and Modern art are sure to impress. The museum is also home to the famous “Rocky Steps” that Sylvester Stallone ran up in the Rocky movies. You’re not a tourist unless you run up the steps humming “Gonna Fly Now.” The larger than life statue of a boxer at the bottom of the stairs is a perfect picture opportunity.

Reading Terminal: The nation’s oldest continuously operating farmers’ market is filled with a variety of vendors, and you will find lots of food, flowers, and crafts worth purchasing. There is a large section devoted to Amish merchants and you can spend plenty of time here browsing things local to Philadelphia as well as things from all over.

Cheesesteaks: Cheesesteak heaven is located at the intersection of 9th Street and Passayunk Avenue, where two Cheesesteak legends are located right across the street from each other. Try Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks and decide who wins this food filled rivalry.

Nightlife: There are also lots of bars and clubs that can be found throughout Philadelphia if you’re looking for some late night entertainment. Try Johnny Brendas or Grace Tavern for a good drink and Fluid Nightclub or The Roxxy if you’re looking to dance.
