Do not expect anything funny around here, since I am the author and my sense of humor is nonexistent. My impetus for making this playlist was my friend Dale calling the Finnish love metal band HIM “the worst band in the world.” Hmmm, I would disagree. HIM has at least one good song, which is the cover of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak, and you simply cannot make “Wicked Game” bad. And, at least HIM is honest in its being plastic kitsch, without any pretense to gosh-darned “rock’n’roll authenticity” (although, bazillions of Eastern European girls who slashed their wrists in tribute to HIM singer Ville Valo would disagree with me on that). So, ever since my friend berated HIM, I’ve been thinking of a way to incorporate the band in a mix (to make my friend angry, of course).

Here is a little Thanatos-centered playlist for you:

It starts with the Russian futurist Aleksei Kruchenykh reading his poem “Requiem” (in Russian, but with a creepy echo) and grows into a smorgasbord of gloomy thrills. Einstuerzende Neubauten will take you to the Oktoberfest of your nightmares in the vilest swamp of 19th-century Germany. With The Vanishing you will creep into the nightmares of the girls mentioned in the previous paragraph. Death Grips will make your brain die a little death by filling it with adrenaline and testosterone. Indian Jewelry will sing to you about nightclubs with a valet service. As for the track by A Place to Bury Strangers-well, it’s there simply because I don’t like their stuff. How can there be a playlist with the word “bleach” in the title without a song that the playlist creator hates? I spent a more-than-normal amount of time trying to remember which songs and bands I hate and then, as if by miracle, I remembered how utterly bored I was at a APTBS show a couple of years ago–problem solved.

And, of course, we have this song by Excepter.
