eventseeker headed to City Lights Bookstore to talk with Alejandro Murguia, whose new collection Stray Poems is now available through City Lights Press.

San Francisco’s first Latino poet laureate, Murguia’s legacy as a local activist, community organizer and impassioned defender of the Mission District’s cultural character is more important than ever during a period of serious demographic shifts in the city. In honor of the poet’s first publication since he achieved laureateship, City Lights held a reading to a packed crowd of dozens of San Francisco lit lovers.

We sat down with Mr. Murguia to get his take on poetry, language and the changing landscape in what has been called “the city of poets.”

Special thanks to Lou Dematteis, David L. Brown and Stacey Lewis for their support and cooperation.
