review | Speedy Ortiz at the Black Cat

BY EVENTSEEKER STAFF

What began as songwriting at a summer camp, Speedy Ortiz has developed into a full-fledge noise-pop band hailing from Massachusetts. Their latest album, Major Arcana, was released last year with Carpark Records. Pitchfork Media has dubbed their record under, “Best New Music,” and their current tour brings along openers, the Big Ups and Pile.

Last week, their live performance spread a meticulously crafted and engaging performance over the stage of the Black Cat. Group members played off one another’s instrumental gifts, creating a fluid and adventurous sound. Energy leapt and landed softly with vocals from Dupuis, who can turn a mouthful of lyrics into an artistic expression. “No Below” was the winning ticket that night, filled with edgy riffs, a 90’s indie rock vibe and a soothing melody over a dark undertone.
