The Black Lips met the Black Cat last week for a hair-raising occasion. The Atlanta natives have been touring the East Coast and will continue across North America until they land in Europe late May. Their edgy 60s psych filters through a punk rock layer to deliver an outstanding sound, and an even better live show. In the past they’ve been known to fling and flail across the stage, but as they’ve grown into music connoisseurs, the Black Lips have crafted a fitting performance.
Every song comes out freshly crisp and all band members contribute to vocals (though the drummer outshines them in this arena). A female saxophonist makes mysterious cameos and comes on cue for several tracks. Melodies pack a power play against firing guitars, and energy seeped from the band to the crowd through the sirenic fog.
